When Ian was about 11 months old we started doing time outs. He was hitting kids when they took his toys (even though he would happily give them back) and throwing temper tantrums. We always put him in a corner because where could you possibly go that you can't find a corner. The first time it was horrible and he did not want to stay and once he did it took me about 20 minutes to calm him down. The second time was great and from then on it has been a piece of cake. Recently he has discovered he can put things down the vents (we believe this is possibly were my drivers license has gone -it is missing but we know Ian had it somewhere in the house) We haven't done a time out in forever -months I would say until this week we have had a few things happen such as picture A....
Yes -usually this door is always closed but if it is open he will run!I may want to start putting the cereal higher.
Picture B -Ian walked over to the vent to dump down his cereal puffs. When he was about to dump them I said. "Ian if you dump your cereal in the vent you will go to time out." Ian dumped his cereal in the vent and then ran to his time out spot with his cereal of course.
Little Stinker!Other then this things have been great! We were at the Fackrell's pool yesterday and had a blast. Ian of course loves the water -he didn't really care to stay in his floaty unless we put it under the little waterfall. Thanks for letting us come and play!

Oh man, we live for Timeouts they help a bad situation fast for THomas, but I hear they don't work on some kids. We have the same floaty thing and Thomas never liked it, but Grace loves it and so now Thomas does too. Go figure
Andrew likes to put things in the vent, too. Luckily, it is mostly all his tiny toys. I don't think he has put my stuff there, yet. I can't help but laugh over Ian putting his cereal in the vent, then putting himself in time out. Some things are just worth the consequence to kids.
Time outs never worked well for Maddie, so we modified them. A time out for Maddie means we take away a favorite toy and the toy goes in time out (meaning she can't play with it for a certain period of time.) Ian is probably still too small for this, but it will work well in a year or two. It's usually something like a doll will go on top of the fridge and she can have it back the next day type of thing. When she gave me a hard time about this, I told her the alternative was that the toy got thrown away. That shut her up REAL quick. And yes, I am that mean. It's like you pointed out, though-there are some things they are just going to do no matter what you try to deter them with.
What a cute little stinker though :) He's such a happy kid! Glad you are taking his mischief in stride.
Ian has the cutest smile. It seems like he is always cheesing it in your pictures. Oh yes the pantry, Nixon loves to dump boxes of cereal, and just wait until he can open the door by himself. It can get messy.
i love time outs! now i just ask bowen during one of his tantrums if he needs a time out...he usually responds, "ya" and walks to the corner with his head down, it's kinda hard not to laugh!

I started time outs young with my son and they have worked pretty good, but it doesn't stop him from doing the same thing right when he gets out. It's a never ending battle :(
That first picture cracks me up because my daughter does the exact same thing. It's frustrating but so cute at the same time.
